Publisher description Two different teams battle for the control over the american colonies. The Royal British Army loyal to the crown is trying to maintian it's influence in "New England". Driven by high taxes and the dream of being an independent country the American rebel forces try to push the british troops out of the contintent. Select one of six different classes with a varity of different weapons ranging from muskets to rifles and sabres to knives. Each class has an individual feeling and handling and the right selection of classes might be the key to victory in a battle. Cross blades with a varity of close combat melee weapons. Fix bayonets and stab your enemies in a rush or sneak behind enemy lines and attack the troops with hunting knives. Sabres are commonly used by higher ranking officers who know the art of fighting with the sabre well.
Battles are fought in huge open terrains pushing the Half-Life engine to it's limits. Some maps are so big that they take up the whole mapping grclass that modders can use. It can takes several minutes to walk from one end of the map to the other. Stand in line. Shoulder to shoulder. Watching the enemy lines as they are marching down the hill. Present Arms! Frontrank make ready! Aim! Fire! Hell breakes loose. The smoke clouds float away and you slowly start to see the enemy lines again. They are screaming and charging with fixed bayonets. Welcome to a Battle Grounds linebattle. Operate different kinds of cannons and artillery. Squadrons of ships are firing their cannons to support the landing troops on bunkerhill. Use the cannons wisely to defend fortifications or important pathways.
Battle Grounds house made particle engine is used to create all kinds of volumetric effects like halos, explosions, smoke, fire, dust, rain, clouds, etc. It supports 32bit TGAs with multiple frames, features collision detection, depth sorting, level of detail and environment lighting. The particleengine can be access by the mapper or directly from the code. Definition files are used to store particle system information. Battle Grounds is fully steam compatible and makes use of all its new features and design possibilities. BG is an officially by valve approved steam 3rd party mod available in the "Browse games..." list. Big parts of the maps in BG are covered with dense bushes, flowers and grass. The grass blades are smoothly waving in the wind while regiments of troops move throught the meadows.

Battle Grounds is 100% free and 100% opensource. The whole codetree can be downloaded and edited. The source code is available in the Game Files Section. It is released under a LGPL (Lesser General Public License). We also release beta releases for public beta testing. Everyone can be beta tester. Simply visit the Development Files Section.
